Last year saw Freshlyground win a MTV Europe Music Award in the Best African Act category...
This year, it seems a first in the MTV Africa Music Awards or the 'MAMAs' - and whether its a new event or not, South Africa sure has climbed into the nominations for this event - to be held later in November on 22nd!
The first MTV Africa Music Awards – MAMAs. What a cool name. Very African. Very retro trendy. To be held in Abuja, Nigeria – somewhere I was nearly supposed to be a month ago for work. Apparently Abuja is the slick city of Nigeria, nothing like the chaos of Lagos!
And on the nomination list across the various categories, it is strongly Nigeria and South Africa who have snapped up the top 5 spots in each category! South Africa has a few strong contenders in the running...
So, from scanning the nominations I have certainly learnt that someone called HHP is quite big in SA – and clearly I should check him out, hip hop aside and all! Plus the fact that Seether has made it onto a few of the categories – which I personally find interesting that as a US based band they are still cutting the mustard for an African inspired awards contest!? I am not at all implying that South African music which is nominated should sound African, but rather that the heavier sounds of Seether are being recognized!
Freshlyground are in the running for a MAMA as well - as are Goldfish, Parlotones and many other exciting and well deserving SA bands!
